ACV vs vAuto

Digital wholesale marketplace and dealer inventory tools. Cox Automotive inventory acquisition, pricing and merchandising suite.

ACV and vAuto overlap in used inventory, but they start from different parts of the process, and a dealer should compare them on what each does in the daily routine of buying, pricing and selling a used car, not on the size of the company behind them.

Direct answer

Choosing between ACV and vAuto

ACV Auctions describes an online wholesale marketplace with condition reports, a market value report, ACV Transportation with more than 5,000 carriers and ACV Capital for floor plan financing, and its newer ACV MAX product sets a vehicle's value from its condition, the rooftop and the moment.

What to check before you choose

vAuto is part of Cox Automotive and covers sourcing, appraisal, stocking and merchandising.

The companies compete most on appraisal and pricing recommendations. ACV's pitch is that condition data makes values vehicle-specific, while vAuto's is market data and an integrated set of tools from acquisition to retail. A store should ask each how an appraisal is produced, how long it takes, how often prices update and how the result is shown to the customer on a trade.

A simple pilot settles most of the question: appraise ten cars through both, buy or sell them and compare estimate against outcome. Ask also how each connects to your DMS, what a rooftop pays each month and what happens to the data if you leave.

Ask ACV how its condition reports are produced and how it handles a dispute when a buyer finds something the report missed, and ask vAuto how its market-based recommendations treat reconditioning cost and local demand. Run the same ten units through both and write down the recommended price and the days each expected to take. When the cars are sold, compare the outcomes, and ask each vendor to explain the biggest miss.

Add a test of speed. A dealer taking in a trade has minutes, not days, so time each tool from the moment a car arrives to the moment a number is on the screen.

Count the inputs: how many photos, how many questions, how much typing. Ask what happens with a car that has a missing record or an odd option.

Ask how the number changes when the car is reconditioned.

Ask both vendors for the accuracy history of their recommendations at stores like yours. A value that is often wrong in one direction costs money either way. Ask how errors are reviewed and whether the dealer can see the comparable sales behind a number.
