Short answer

Compare automotive digital marketing agencies on channel scope, dealer account ownership, media transparency, measurement quality, automotive platform access, creative operations, service model, conflicts and exit portability—not awards or a single performance screenshot.

Separate media from fees

Require a budget that distinguishes platform spend, management, creative, technology, data and pass-through costs.

Verify measurement

Agree on conversion definitions, call and form quality, deduplication, CRM/DMS matching, incrementality limits and who administers analytics.

Test service capacity

Name the day-to-day team, account load, escalation path, meeting cadence, change turnaround and continuity plan.

Establish account ownership in writing before launch

Ad accounts, analytics properties, tag containers, call-tracking numbers, domains, creative files and audience lists are all assets that can be built inside an agency's own structures and stay there. Ownership is easy to arrange at the start and expensive to argue about at the end. Put each asset on a list, name the owner, and record what transfers on termination.

  • Advertising accounts and their historical performance data
  • Analytics properties, tag containers and conversion definitions
  • Call-tracking numbers and their porting rights
  • Creative source files, not only exported assets
  • Audience and remarketing lists where the platform permits transfer

Interrogate the measurement, not the dashboard

Two agencies reporting the same channel will produce different conversion counts, because they define a conversion differently. Before comparing anyone's performance, agree what counts: which form submissions, which call durations, which chats, how duplicates are removed, how a lead is matched to a sale, and what the agency cannot claim credit for. A number without its definition is not a measurement.

Understand what a co-op program is dictating

Manufacturer co-op programs constrain approved providers, creative treatments, claim documentation and sometimes measurement. Some of what looks like an agency's strategic choice is a program requirement, and some of what looks like a program requirement is a habit. Ask the agency to identify which is which, and what it would do differently if the program were not a factor.

Test the exit before you need it

Ask, during evaluation, what the first thirty days after termination would look like: what continues running, what stops immediately, what data you keep, what you have to rebuild, and what the agency will and will not do to assist. An agency that answers this clearly is describing a process it has run before.

  • Notice period and what continues during it
  • Which assets transfer, in what format, by when
  • Whether historical reporting remains accessible
  • What the dealership must rebuild from scratch

Questions dealers ask

How to choose an automotive digital marketing agency FAQ

What should a dealership marketing agency report?

At minimum: spend and fees, reach and demand signals, qualified conversions, lead quality, appointment and sales/service outcomes where matchable, changes made and unresolved risks.

Should the agency own the ad accounts?

The dealership should generally retain administrative access and portable history. Document ownership and transition access in the contract.

How long should an agency contract be?

Term length is a commercial decision, but renewal, cancellation, data access, creative rights and transition obligations should be explicit before launch.

Why do two agencies report different results for the same month?

Because they define conversions differently — which call durations count, which form submissions count, how duplicates are removed, how a lead is matched to a sale. Agree the definitions before comparing anyone's numbers, or you are comparing definitions rather than performance.

Should the dealership own the call-tracking numbers?

Ownership and porting rights should be established in writing. Numbers that cannot be ported become a switching cost that is discovered at the worst moment, and the historical call data attached to them is usually lost with them.

What does manufacturer co-op change about agency selection?

It can constrain approved providers, creative treatments and claim documentation, and sometimes measurement. Ask the agency to separate what the program requires from what it recommends, so the constraint is visible as a constraint.

Is a long contract ever in the dealership's interest?

It can be, in exchange for a priced concession — a rate held, a fee waived, transition assistance guaranteed. A long term with nothing exchanged for it is a term the dealership gave away.
