What are the risks of AI lead handling at a dealership?
The three that matter operationally are unsupervised action, unattributed messaging and unauditable history. An AI that can send messages, book appointments or make commitments on the store's behalf is acting as the dealership. Establish which actions require human approval, how every message is logged in the CRM, and how a customer reaches a person.
Define the action boundary
Ask precisely which actions the system can take without approval: reply, follow up, quote a payment, commit to a price, book an appointment, reopen a closed lead. Get the list, and get the ability to change it.
Require full logging in the system of record
Every outbound message and every action should be visible in the CRM against the customer record, attributed and timestamped. Conversations that live only in the vendor's console are invisible to the manager reviewing the deal.
Handle disclosure and opt-out
Decide how the store discloses automated communication and how a customer opts out or reaches a human. Consent and messaging rules apply to the dealership regardless of who built the tool.
Test the failure mode, not the demo
Ask what happens when the model is uncertain, when a customer asks something out of scope, and when a message would be factually wrong about inventory or price. The answer to that question is the product.

What is an AI BDC for dealerships?
An AI BDC uses automated text, email, chat or voice interactions to handle defined sales or service communication tasks. It may answer questions, qualify intent, schedule appointments or continue follow-up, but its authority and escalation rules must be explicit.
AI lead vendor evaluationHow should a dealership evaluate AI lead handling and follow-up?
Evaluate AI lead handling with a controlled test covering source accuracy, identity, consent, tone, uncertainty, scheduling, CRM write-back, human escalation, auditability, security and measured outcomes for the dealer’s actual workflows.
