Hunter showcased it at the 2019 NADA Show, presenting it as a next-generation tread depth measuring tool.

The system captures tire tread, wheel size and VIN in one pass and displays the inspection results within seconds. Hunter says it adds edge wear detection to the usual tread depth measure.

So a service provider can identify wear on the edge of each tire and give the customer an in-depth inspection result.

Hunter says the unit builds a scan of each tire from a very large number of data points and produces repeatable scans even on wet tires. It describes a pedestal-free design that maximizes shop space, and installation options as a standalone unit with two mounting choices, or as a flush-mount unit integrated with the Quick Check Drive alignment inspection system.

The system runs on Hunter's cloud-based software subscription platform. A Hunter distributor, Ches Auto Equipment, wrote about shipping the unit with the WinAlign 16.1 release.

Hunter says the unit can cycle passenger vehicles through quickly, so it fits a service drive where cars arrive continuously. The intended use is to make a tire inspection part of every visit and give advisors a printed or on-screen result to explain a recommendation.

Quick Tread Edge measures tire tread across each tire from edge to edge as the car rolls over it. Hunter says it uses eight cameras, 32 laser sensors and about 400,000 tread depth data points, and that the added edge-wear detection can show wear a manual check may miss.

A display can show the customer the result seconds after the drive-through. It can stand alone with two mounting options or sit flush with Quick Check Drive for alignment.
