Car Dealer GPS And Payment-assurance Tracking
GPS & payment-assurance tracking for dealerships: GPS location, collections and starter-interrupt devices used to manage financed-vehicle risk on buy-here-pay-here and subprime portfolios.
Buy here pay here dealers finance in-house to customers with weak credit, and default rates in this segment run far above those at banks, which is why tracking devices are common.
How to choose car dealer GPS and payment-assurance tracking
There are two kinds: tracking-only units, and starter-interrupt units that can keep a stopped vehicle from starting. There is no federal rule on how to disclose or use them, and only a handful of states regulate them directly. California, for example, limits use to checking that the device works, repossession, or locating a vehicle to service or keep a loan current, so the first question is what your state allows and what the contract must say.

What to check before you buy
Then ask about operations. How does the customer receive payment reminders and grace-period warnings before any device action, and is there a record of each warning?
Who in your store can trigger a disable, and is every action logged with a reason? What is the fallback if the device loses signal, and how does the vendor help you locate and recover a vehicle lawfully?
Count the cost over the loan life, including the hardware, the monthly fee, installation and removal, rather than the price at the counter.
Location history is personal information about your customers, so ask who at the vendor and in your store can see it, how long it is kept, how it is protected and what is deleted when the loan is paid off. Put these answers in the contract before installing units on any vehicle.
