ACV Auctions vs ADESA Clear
ACV on ACV Auctions: The online auction marketplace for dealer buyers and sellers. ADESA on ADESA Clear: A digital auction experience for searching, bidding and buying.
ACV Auctions and ADESA Clear are both digital wholesale auctions, and they run on different rules. ACV describes an online marketplace where dealers buy and sell used vehicles, with condition reports, an engine-listening tool called APEX and a Virtual Lift view of the undercarriage.
Choosing between ACV Auctions and ADESA Clear
Its sell page promises cash in twenty minutes. ADESA describes ADESA Clear as a timed digital auction.
Its own materials say every starting bid equals the reserve price, so the opening number is the floor and a car that draws a bid sells. Trade coverage described the product as combining ADESA's wholesale auction experience with technology and merchandising work from Carvana.
What to check before you choose
The opening mechanism is the first difference to understand. In a model where the starting bid is the reserve, a seller sets the minimum before the sale and the buyer sees a firm floor. In a model with a hidden or flexible reserve, a seller may pull a car back, or a buyer may bid without knowing whether it will sell.
That changes how a seller prices. A store with a car it does not want to sell below a number must choose that number before the auction begins. Write down the floor for ten cars and test how each platform treats it.
Buyers should also compare what they see before bidding. Read the condition report, the photos, the announcements and the arbitration terms for each platform. Check what happens if a car does not match the report, how quickly a claim must be filed and who pays for transport back.
Fees come next. Request the full schedule from each, including buyer fees, seller fees, transport, title handling and payment timing. Take five recent sales and recalculate the net under each schedule.
Check the reach. A marketplace is only as good as the buyers present. Find out how many dealers bid in your region and how long cars typically take to sell.
If you use both, plan which cars go where. Fresh trade-ins with clean reports might go to one platform, older units to the other. Track the net on each group for three months and adjust.
Payment timing is the last piece. Find out how many days pass between a sale and the money in your account on each platform, and what happens to a car whose buyer fails to pay.
Request the policy in writing, and track the real figure over the first ten sales rather than the number in the brochure. Cash flow matters most to stores that floor-plan their trades.
