What to check before you choose

Ask each how its AI agent reads inventory, pricing and appointment data from your systems and what it is allowed to promise. Get an answer on how fast it responds to a new lead, how follow-up cadences are set and how a customer is passed to a person, and how reviews, payments and texting consent are handled and who owns the conversation history.

Find out what the base price includes, whether you pay by message or by seat and what integrations exist with your CRM and DMS. Start with one department and compare appointments set and shown.

Impel describes an automotive AI platform with sales, service, chat, marketing and merchandising products used by thousands of retailers, and it has grown by acquisition. Podium markets an AI employee for local businesses in many industries and says more than 60,000 businesses use it, with a separate page for auto dealerships. Both promise fast replies, appointment booking and re-engagement of past customers.

The difference is focus. Impel builds only for automotive, with OEM program approvals that matter to co-op funds.

Podium covers home services and other local trades as well, so a dealer should ask what is built specifically for dealerships, which DMS and CRM integrations are live and whether its messaging respects manufacturer programs. Ask for a reference in your brand and read a week of conversations from each.

Run the same test with both: send ten after-hours leads through each product and read the replies. Check speed, accuracy about your inventory, tone and what happens when the customer asks something the AI cannot answer.

Read the handoffs, since a bad one loses the deal. Ask how each product records consent for texting and how the store can export all conversations.

A fair comparison also covers who builds and supports the product. Impel states that it is automotive only and tracks manufacturer co-op programs, which matters for reimbursement, while Podium is a general local-business platform with an automotive page. Ask each for the list of dealership brands that approve it, the names of the integrations in your stack and the escalation path when a customer is angry.
