The stated aim is a more open model where software from different companies can talk to each other.

The network lets developers, dealers and OEMs build and publish solutions through APIs. Developers can also offer their own APIs.

Early APIs focused on service and sales, with more expected over time.

A marketplace side lets technology providers sell integrated products in one place. It handles billing, provisioning and subscriptions.

Built In Chicago reported that Fortellis averaged about a million API calls a month at the time.

A dealer would ask which of its vendors publish on Fortellis. A vendor would ask what access costs and who approves it.

Fortellis is CDK's open exchange where developers publish automotive APIs and dealers, manufacturers, lenders and data providers connect to them. CDK says there are no fees to join, to publish or to reach basic reporting and support, and it reports about a million API calls a month.

Early developers included AutoFi, Equifax and SiriusXM, and CDK has since added APIs for repair orders, CRM data and payment settling. For a dealer, the useful question is not the marketplace but which of its vendors connect through it, what each connection can read or write, and who approves access to the store's data.

Fortellis publishes its API catalog, which lets a dealer or vendor read what an integration can do before signing. CDK has released individual APIs for repair orders, CRM data from Elead, and payment settling.

A dealer evaluating a vendor that claims a CDK integration should ask which Fortellis APIs it uses, whether the dealer or the vendor pays any fee and how access is revoked.
