Accounts payable in a dealership means many invoices from many kinds of payees: manufacturers, floor plan lenders, parts suppliers, service vendors and marketing agencies, across several rooftops.
How to choose car dealer accounting software
The DMS has basic AP, but standalone automation usually sits beside it and exchanges data by API, file transfer or database access: it pulls approved payables from the DMS, pays by the cheapest channel and returns the payment record. Check which of those methods your DMS supports with the vendor, and what it costs you to turn it on.

What to check before you buy
Controls decide the fraud risk. Require duplicate invoice detection, approval paths by amount, department and location, segregation of duties so the person who approves an invoice cannot release its payment, dual authorization above a dollar limit, and an audit trail of every action with a time stamp.
Ask about payment methods (check, ACH, card, single-use virtual card, wire) and who can change a vendor's bank details, because changed-bank-detail requests are how many payment frauds begin. Get an answer on what share of invoices are captured without a person typing, how a store in a group sees the whole group's payables, and what the export looks like if you leave.
